in 2016. i rented out a small piano studio in east london for nearly the whole year and set out to write an introspective, trendless, and mostly beatless album. inspired by albums from this mortal coil and scott walker, who also sought freedom to work outside of the expectations of their previous work, i limited the instrumentation to mostly an acoustic piano and effects, which left space to expose a lot of emotional vulnerabilities about myself and people close to me. writing lullabies about being a mother in a dystopian world, with pensive words about swimming against the current as a female artist, i felt free enough to tell untold truths that i’ve never felt comfortable talking about within music. free, liberated, empowered. naked.

this releases includes little goat and ana bhebak, two middle-eastern-influenced tracks, which naturally came together for this special release. a take-off for the fusion of the old arab classic music with the new beat making, middle east meets west in this release, from buttering trio s temporary point of view.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. the north east of england is known for its role in helping to shape the uk house and techno club landscape during the late 80 s and throughout 90 s. it’s infectious and raw energy engaged slip-d from a young age exposing him to a number of venues including the riverside, empire, pleasure rooms and the hedonistic rockshots. drawing inspiration from the scene along with potent labels like svek, guidance and shaboom that came in to prominence in the late 90 s, a bedroom studio set up of amassed hardware funded on a basic income was then formed over time. residence in teesdale avenue, regular local car thefts and the wail of the rag and bone man all assembled themselves as a formula of what was happening outside the 4 walls of the studio. the vaulted hypnoelectronix no.1 finally got pressed after some years, and transports us to the true crux of that era. more material to follow in 2017 on the hpnx imprint...

what initially started as idea for a dj-duo project quickly turned into a new production outlet for german producer david hanke. he is well known for his northern jazz, funk and afrofunk productions under various monikers ever since his first release back in 2008. the most recognized surely is his renegades of jazz-alias.
after starting to fully embrace the afrofunk vibe with his 2016-released renegades of jazz album moyo wangu as well as two dem juju poets singles in the same year it’s now about time to release “liberated thoughts” - the longplay debut for dem juju poets.
having spent an influential part of his childhood in arusha, tanzania and engrained the music of east africa, his sound combines these influences with modern, more club-orientated electronic afrofunk productions which defines the core sound of dem juju poets.
with “liberated thoughts” hanke refines his afrofunk vision for 2017 informed by his experience as a dj in venues all over europe which naturally led to a more floor functional production approach.

hailing from east london but otherwise shrouded in mystery, loop lf makes a strong first appearance with this opening gambit for well street records. there s a diverse array of sounds presented across this 12-, with the intricate minimalisms of -moon gz- matching glitchy percussion with ethereal pad tones to great effect before -ocean drums- opens the sound out into a broader, fuller broken beat context. -stepping back- is an audacious production that makes full use of the space between the drum hits before -you wouldn t understand- heads into an overtly reduced, dubstep-minded headspace perfect for all lovers of the original fwd vibe in a modern setting.

when tresor founder dimitri hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in east berlin on march 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of berlin s most influential and enduring techno clubs. “we didn’t know what would happen 10 months later,” he says. “we signed a lease for a year. which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months…”
as tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the us, germany, china, france, austria, italy and the uk, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed detroit techno – economic neglect and broken industry – were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification east berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

bona sforsa was a 16th century polish queen of italian origin. so much for a little history lesson. jump a few centuries forward and you’ll find bonasforsa in the studio on the 6th floor of a block of flats in east london. it’s the new moniker of italian-polish producer duo rico casazza and krzysztof kozber.

you should already know who porter ray is (but you probably don’t.) the machines that seek to control your perception don’t want you to. he is too much of an anomaly. porter skews the modern experiment that is contemporary rap music wildly. he is in a word: authentic. porter ray is a natural… he sounds like east seattle feels.

shamrock grew up in the township called ‘kwathema’, in the east of johannesburg. he has being crazy for music since he was a young child, and at primary school he sang as the soloist in the choir. everyone now knows that south africa is the house music capitol of the world! most young upcoming producers look up the american and european producers, but shamrock’s sound is standing out from the rest, as he’s been digging into his african roots to come up with his own style of music, working with mainly south african musicians, only using the computer to record the audio. on this album he’s also featured international musicians han litz,flutist from the netherlands, asali, vocalist from kenya, andy compton, from the uk, and jimmy gabriel on sax from nigeria.
